1. Introduction
Welcome to Skano ("the App"), a food barcode scanner and halal checker developed and operated by Hamza Benmalek ("we," "our," or "us"). Skano is available on iOS and Android and allows users to scan food barcodes to instantly get health scores, halal status, and full nutrition facts — with a special focus on Moroccan local products.
This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, share, and protect personal information when you use Skano. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. Data We Collect
We collect the following categories of personal information:
- Account information: When you create an account, we collect your email address and optionally a display name. If you sign in via Google or Apple, we receive limited profile data from that provider.
- Scanned barcodes: Barcodes you scan are sent to our database and AI processing services to retrieve product information. Scan history may be stored to provide your personal scan log.
- Camera usage: The App requires camera access solely to scan barcodes. We do not store or transmit photos taken by the camera.
- Usage data: Information about how you interact with the App — products scanned, features used, session duration, and in-app events — collected to improve the App.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, unique device identifiers, and crash logs used to debug issues and optimize the App.
- Advertising identifiers: If you use the free tier, Google AdMob collects advertising identifiers (IDFA on iOS, GAID on Android) to serve personalized ads. You may opt out in your device settings.
3. How We Use Your Data
- Provide and operate the Skano service, including looking up product data and calculating health scores and halal status.
- Process food label images through Google Gemini AI to read ingredients in French and Arabic.
- Maintain and sync your personal scan history across devices via Supabase.
- Send important notifications about your account (password resets, service updates). We do not send marketing emails without your consent.
- Analyze aggregate usage patterns to improve the App and fix bugs. We do not sell individual usage data.
- Serve advertisements (free tier) through Google AdMob in compliance with Google's advertising policies.
- Comply with applicable legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
4. Data Storage & Security
Your account data and scan history are stored on Supabase, a cloud database platform. Data may be stored in the European Union or the United States depending on your account region.
We implement industry-standard security measures including:
- Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) for all data transmitted between the App and our servers.
- Row-level security policies on Supabase so users can only access their own data.
- Hashed passwords — we never store plaintext passwords.
- Regular security audits and dependency updates.
5. Third-Party Services
We do not sell your personal information to any third party.
6. Data Retention
- Account data: Retained until you delete your account. Upon deletion, your profile and email are removed within 30 days.
- Scan history: Retained as long as your account exists. Deleted with your account.
- Usage analytics: Aggregated and anonymized data may be retained indefinitely. Individual event data is deleted within 24 months.
- Crash logs: Retained for 90 days.
7. Your Rights
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Ask us to correct inaccurate information in your account.
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data. See our Account Deletion page for instructions.
- Portability: Request your scan history in a portable format (JSON or CSV).
- Objection: Object to processing of your data for marketing purposes.

8. Children's Privacy
Skano is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and notify you via in-app notification. Your continued use of Skano after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
